The Gift That is Jesus

Each piece of scripture gives us small glimpses of glory into the character of our Savior.

Prophecy, revealing His omniscient Kingship.

Acts against evil in the Old Testament uncovering His steadfast provision.

Healing of lepers, raising of the dead, and restoration of sight to the blind, through His divine power, yet days later reclining at a dinner table with sinners showing us His tenderhearted compassion.

Flipping of tables disclosing His radical enthusiasm for the Kingdom, yet His gentle and lowly heart on display by washing the feet of His disciples.

The character of our Savior. Displayed in boundless acts of love, and small whispers of grace. In world-wide proclamations, and intimate intercession from the Spirit.

But the Christmas story seems to be both.

Baby Jesus is precious and innocent, yet He is supremely sovereign.

Humbly wrapped in ragged rags, yet full of God's glory.

A baby- sweet and gentle, away in a manger; but at the same time, the invincible Son of God.

Who are we that He would step down from His throne and identify with us in our humanness? Who are we that He who is above time and space would breathe our same air? And who are we that God would give us the Christmas holiday to see a glimpse into his unfathomable character?

An unfathomable character that we seek to worship.

An unfathomable character that we seek to celebrate today.

For it is not the description in scripture, the understanding of our hearts, or the knowledge of our minds that gives Christ the worthiness of celebration.

it is instead His worthiness that has inspired all of these things.

God is not reliant on the words of His followers, the beliefs of His people, or even the Holiday of Christmas to give Him the honor that He deserves.

Despite how we might perceive Him- He is already in possession of His title, and worthy of all praise and celebration.

Today, as we gather to celebrate, let us fixate on the character of our Savior displayed in the human baby, Jesus.

He has loved the world in an incomprehensible way through the gifting of Himself. Today is the day to acknowledge the things we do know of His character, and revel our awestruck minds in the things that remain beyond our appreciation.

Each piece of scripture gives us small glimpses of glory into the character of our Savior, and interchangeable stories of the birth of our Savior found in the Gospels seems to be the lens in which we perceive the most boundless act of grace that has ever come to be.

What a wondrous act of love that is the gift of baby Jesus, and what an honor that we get to celebrate today.
