Valentines Day: what Love is and what Love is not

There are so many different situations for Valentine's day. You're either in a relationship waiting to get spoiled, talking to someone impatiently waiting on them to ask you to be their valentine, maybe you have been in a relationship for so long that valentines day isn’t as big of a deal anymore, or maybe you’re single. But no matter what season of life that you might be in on February 14th, there is one common theme that is found in any situation; Love.

This blog is not just for my single people… This is for the head over heels in love couples, the engaged people, the talking stage, the “I don't know what we are” group and everyone in between. Because every single situation is founded on that same common ground... Love. So I thought what better day than the day of love to remind myself, and anyone reading this, what love is.

To answer the question “what is love?” is really hard from a worldly perspective. We cannot look to this world to define for us “love” because if you did that, you would be given the definition of a superficial and temporary thing… The idea of love has gotten further and further from the truth throughout the years simply because this world is run by the king of lies.

And before I write anything else, let me first proclaim some truth over the lies that the Devil might be telling you about Love this valentine's day…

First of all, you have to know that he calls you by everything you're NOT, and wants to make you believe things that pull you further away from the apparent truth that is found in the word of God. So when it comes to love, of course, the devil wants you to think you can't be loved… You’re not worthy of love… or that you will never find it. AND THIS COULD NOT BE FURTHER FROM THE TRUTH!

If you're in a relationship, but feel unworthy to be in that relationship. I boldly proclaim that A LIE from the evil one. If you are crushing on someone and hear a voice in your head whispering to you that they will never like you back because you’re not good enough, I declare that FALSE in the name of Jesus. If you're single or even got turned down on valentines day this year, and have thoughts running through your head that “I'm not worthy of love” or “I'll never find love” I am exposing those as an ABSOLUTE LIE in the name of Christ, and commanding those thoughts captive and obedient to Him.

The first step of knowing what love is is to know Who love is.

And as Believers in Christ, we get the opportunity to know! In 1 John chapter 4, it says that “ Beloved, let us love one another, for LOVE IS FROM GOD, and whoever loves has been born of God and knows God. Anyone who does not love does not know God, because GOD IS LOVE.”

So when the devil tells you that you can't be loved… You’re not worthy of love… or that you will never find love. Remember this verse.

Remember that you CAN be loved. Actually, you ARE loved and have been since the beginning of the universe. You are loved so much that God gave His only son, sent Him to earth, took your cross, died your death, took your sins, resurrected, and gave you every good thing that came from it. He loves you so much that He gives you ETERNAL life. He loves you so much that despite your sin and slaved brokenness, He gives you forgiveness and freedom.

And guess what? You don’t have to find love, BECAUSE LOVE HAS ALREADY FOUND YOU! Love created you! God seeks you out and desires a relationship with you. Love Himself, longs to be in a relationship with YOU.

So what is love? The simple answer: God.

And what is love not? Whether or not you have a date this Valentine's day.

So make this Valentine's a celebration. A celebration of the Love that you have in your family, your relationships, your friendships; but most importantly, this Valentine's day remember the love that is so freely given to you each and every day by Love Himself. And do not believe the lies that come from the evil one.

If you're in a relationship, enjoy a day with the person you love, and thank God that because He first loved you, you get the opportunity to love in this life. And if you're single, enjoy a day that you get to fully recognize how much you are really loved by Love Himself.

And one last thought for the day of love: The love in this world is temporary, but the Love found in God is eternal. Obey His command, and love as many people as you can while you are here, but don’t lose sight of the Love that will be WITH you, and IN you for eternity.

Happy Valentine's day!

You. Are. Loved.
